Leon Lewis-Nicol uses music to connect and inspire

The first time I saw jazz pianist Leon Lewis-Nicol perform was at the Rose Bowl Tavern. After the first set, Lewis-Nicol approached me to introduce himself and thank me for coming out to support him and his trio. In fact, he did the same thing with every other person in the room. Although I’d come by myself, his gesture made me feel welcome, and like everyone else was welcome, too.

Pianist Leon Lewis-Nicol is originally from Sierra Leone. He is currently a student at the University of Illinois, where he is studying jazz piano. He will perform at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 7 p.m. on Friday Feb. 18, 2022. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Junior Commercial Music major grew up in Freetown, Sierra Leone, a developing country where there are no traffic lights or smooth roads. He lived there for 15 years and then moved to Ghana in 2010 to escape some of the poverty. “It was a lot more developed than Sierra Leone, but not as developed as the U.S. is [since] it’s a first-world country,” Lewis-Nicol said.
